In our last installment of our Humans of Altus series, we met with a new hire to the team, Anish Khan. In this post I will be sitting down with a more veteran Altus employee, Dean Carrotte, our Director of Professional Services.
We talked about Dean’s (slightly) complicated history with Altus and what keeps him motivated to do the best job possible for our clients. Read on to see what he had to say:
What motivated you to join the team at Altus?
I had just spent five years teaching high school (at my son’s school so I could keep an eye on him!) and I wanted to get back into consulting. I love working with customers and technology and being able to make a difference is very important to me. So when I saw what Altus was about and the work they do for nonprofits I knew it would be a good fit—and I haven’t looked back since.
When did you know working at Altus was the best decision for you?
It’s a bit more complicated than one instantaneous moment for me. I actually left Altus after working here for four years and went to work for a much larger company. This company was doing the same sort of work as Altus and it was within the same nonprofit space—which I have always loved—but working there wasn't a good fit for me. The corporate culture of this large organization was just something that didn't connect with me and although I liked the work I was doing for this company, I knew I needed a change. So, after 3 years away I asked for my job back at Altus and after just one week back here I knew I had made the right decision.
Who inspires you?
That’s a tough question. I don’t think one person or thing inspires me necessarily. I’m extremely self-motivated, and I think the drive I have comes from within me. Every day I wake up at 5am ready to go to work and ready to make a difference. Some days you leave the office feeling discouraged and wondering if what you’re doing is really helping at all, and some days you get to go home with a sense of satisfaction and pride in the work you’ve done. I always want to improve and make things better for the organizations we serve and I think that’s what truly drives me.
What do you most enjoy doing outside of work?
When I get the chance I like to go golfing, and I really enjoy playing guitar. I’m also always trying to get up to my cottage in Muskoka. I’m very good with my hands and I actually built my cottage myself from the ground up—after I burned the old one down to make room!
Cool fact about Dean:
He has volunteered his time to coach hockey at all levels, and three of the players he’s coached have ended up in the NHL!
