Happy Canada Day and why we love Canada

Posted by Nicola Dickinson on Jul 1, 2014 12:00:00 PM

First off, let me start by saying Happy Canada Day Everyone! Today we celebrate Canada’s 147th birthday. In 1867 the Constitution Act was signed and resulted in the founding of Canada. In 1867 Canada consisted of only four provinces, today Canada has grown to ten provinces and three territories and is 9,984,670 sq. km. (making it the second largest country in the world – second only to Russia). As an all Canadian company, Altus Dynamics, who are only celebrating our 11th birthday this year, we believe that Canada is a fantastic country for business and opportunities, but it’s also so much more than that. Here are four things we love about Canada!

Multiculturalism & Diversity

To us, this is the greatest thing about living in Canada. There is an incredible mix of people from different cultures and ethnic backgrounds that live together in harmony throughout the entire country. Canada celebrates its diversity and is evident everywhere you go – from the vast range of cuisine to events like World Pride which has just finished in Toronto, or the number of different religions celebrated around the country. It is strongly evident in cities like Toronto and Vancouver, where the vast majority of new immigrants find themselves, but we are beginning to see a larger diverse culture in smaller towns and cities as well. As Canadians, we love to see the diversity, peace, and acceptance growing within every corner of the country.

Volunteerism

Canadians get true joy from volunteering and contributing to their communities and country. In 2001, The Canadian Volunteerism Initiative (CVI) was announced, and is an on-going program to help Canadians get connected with volunteer organizations and enhance volunteer experiences. This program established thirteen local networks – one in each province and territory – and delivers a range of programs and services related to volunteerism. As Altus Dynamics works extensively with non-profits, we value programs such as the CVI and are glad to be from a country that cares about volunteering and giving back to the community as much as we do.

The Seasons

A contentious one this but in Canada we are very familiar with all four seasons – which is a positive! We are blessed with beautiful fall colours, warm spring rain and fresh blooms, fantastic patio weather, and of course the snow (good and bad). As Canadians, we love our summers - we all enjoy spending our summer’s barbequing and drinking ice cold beer. But we also love our winters, we all have fond memories of a white Christmas, building snowmen taller than ourselves, and of course let’s not forget about playing ice hockey!

And a final, strange one…Star Trek (the original series)

Now, although Star Trek was not filmed in Canada it owes much of its success to us. William Shatner (Captain Kirk) and James Doohan (Scotty) were both born in Canada! William Shatner was born on March 22nd, 1931 in Montreal, Quebec and James Doohan was born on March 3rd, 1920 in Vancouver, British Columbia.

James Doohan, was most recognized for his missing finger and Scotty’s accent. During the Second World War, he was wounded while leading his men into battle on D-Day. He was hit by six rounds, one of which went through his right middle finger, and another hit him in the chest – but his life was saved by a silver cigarette case given to him by his brother! He was also trained as a pilot and flew aircraft for the 666 (AOP) Squadron. After the war, he began his early acting career appearing in The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits, Fantasy Island, and several others before his major role in Star Trek: The Original Series. So now you know!!!

Canada has a lot of to be proud of – and as a Canadian company, Altus Dynamics is proud of what Canada has provided us in the past and the opportunities it will continue offer in the future. We are very proud to be Canadian!
