Farewell to the AS/400

Posted by James Faw on May 31, 2013 4:00:00 PM

For many, the term ‘AS/400’ is a throwback to the 1980’s, when computers were beige with green screens, supported by large in-house IT teams and formidable hardware. It is a nostalgic memory which is becoming rarer as organization modernise their IT infrastructure and solutions to meet the challenges of a modern world and workforce more comfortable with Windows-style interfaces and touch screens than green screens and tabbing!

And so it was the case with our client, The Banff Centre in Alberta, a non profit arts and cultural organization, who have recently moved away from their old AS/400 system to our HR/Payroll solution and employee portals. The Banff Centre accounting function was already running on the Altus Dynamics financial management suite for non profits as well as our purchasing portals, so this has rounded out their overall solution nicely.

Such was the sentimental attachment to the old system that they wrote a very interesting piece about the experience, lamenting the passing of their old system while looking forward to all the benefits of the new. Read it for yourself and see if it brings back any memories of a bygone era.
